Part of Photo 3 showing an enlarged area of the peaks of Rangitoto Island.
In real view, particularly through binoculars, as expected, buildings can be seen & features are significantly more distinct than in the photo.
The beacon of Iliomana Rock can be seen as a white speck on the waterline a little to the right of just below the left hand peak (Rangitoto’s highest peak) It is clearly visible in real view.
The left hand side of Photo 3’s transit was the most difficult transit of all to establish, as it involves only humps in the landscape & therefore is a less distinct transit. However the 2 transits so obtained gave a position satisfactorily close to the 1026 hours position estimated by Seaway on Mr Pigneguy’s drawing.
Position at Photo 3 : Latitude 36* 49.20 S. Longitude 174* 54.08 E
The 2 positions, where photos 1 & 3 were taken, are shown on the following chart.
It is of interest to note that the distance between the 2 positions is 0.48 nmile i.e. effectively the same as across the Waitemata harbour from Devonport to the container terminal.
