Showing classique after crossing ahead, being about 40* on the starboard bow of Seaway.
Julian Joy – I estimate that looking from Classique, Seaway is about 80* on Classique’s starboard bow.
This photo is close to the closest point of approach (CPA). It is clear that what most mariners would consider an ‘uncomfortable’ clearing distance exists. What the distance is, whether it is dangerous or not & what caused it, is not agreed by the parties involved.
The distance was investigated by me as not being critical to the maneuvering of the vessels according to any rules that apply. The calculations made by Mr Young are not examined by me, apart from to check the method used. Variations in the calculation would exist due to the trim, draft & so on of Seaway & the height of the standing place above water level. I decided that whatever the distance is, it is close & not significant to the overall decision.
Whether the distance was 25 or 80 mtrs or somewhere in between has no influence on the conclusions of the investigation.
Its important role is to fix the locations of the 2 vessels relative to each other in photo 3 from which I reverse engineered the incident’s development.
