The calculations made (at Half-moon Bay) by Mr Young (& Ian Howden) are not examined by me, apart from to check the method used. Variations in the calculation would exist due to trim, draft & so on of Seaway & the height of the standing place above water level. I decided that whatever the distance is, it is not significant to the overall decision.
I visited Seaway & stood in about the same position Mr Howden is standing in Photo 16 & 17 in the MNZ photo book. A photo I took follows. This photo is not an exact replica due to the fact that I lined up the post (projecting from Seaway’s starboard bow) by eye level, not ground level. It is used to highlight the influence that draft, trim & so on will have & thereby make the distance measure hereby calculated as being necessarily very approximate. My photo therefore shows the approximate view of Seaway from the deck level of Classique.
In both Mr Young’s & my photos, the ramp is down on the concrete. I estimate the height of Mr Howden’s feet, on the sand, to have been about 1 mtr above water level.
The photo below was taken by me standing in about the position of Mr Howden in photo 16 & 17 of MNZ photo book. Apart from the ramp position, it indicates the general view that Classique would have of Seaway just before the photo 3 position.
