“The most common methods used to assess if Risk of Collision exists can be summarized in the following table, where I (Julian Joy) have also ranked them in order of accuracy & reliability.”
New information has come to light which could rightly have the last method, ‘Relative to Background’ at the top of the list.
Excerpt from a post here – 26 Oct’14 … “Proportional navigation = Line of Sight.
Here’s a scientific Treatise of a Missile guidance system first discovered from sea navigation to avoid collisions based on how the Line of Sight bearing changes or not. An alternative name for the technique is Constant Bearing Decreasing Range. This link provides further authentication & a reference to the danger of M Pigneguy’s use of his Relative bearing
Proportional navigation (also known as PN or Pro-Nav) is a guidance law (analogous to proportional control) used in some form or another by most homing air target missiles. It is based on the fact that two vehicles are on a collision course when their direct Line-of-Sight does not change direction…
Where an is the acceleration perpendicular to instantaneous line of sight, N is the proportionality constant generally having an integer value 3-5 (dimensionless), λ˙ is the line of sight rate, and V is the closing velocity.
For example, if the line of sight rotates slowly from north to east, the missile should turn to the right by a certain factor faster than the LOS-rate. This factor is called the Navigation Constant (Knav).”
Relative to Background, as Julian Joy calls this method, is accurate is regardless of relative speeds & distance of reference point. Personal estimate is more precise than that possible with a compass especially in conditions where a compass cannot be used or one is not available.
