The Waiheke Roll on/Roll off ferry was on a regular run expected to pass Sth Motuihe & Browns Island enroute to Auckland – at the point of reaching Browns Island, it would’ve turned to its port to head west towards Auckland. Classique was heading East from Auckland, towards an anchorage at SW Motuihe. From North of Browns Island Classique saw the ferry 3 nmiles away. As Classique left Browns Island astern, the ferry was 2 nm away, changing course at Sth Motuihe to 284T & then 286T. Ferry traveling at 15.5 knots began approaching Classique at an angle of about 25 degrees – Classique traveling at probably less than 7 kts. The ferry’s 1st photo was taken at aprox 0.5 nmile away when Seaway was steering about 292*.
The ferry had been incrementally altering its course towards Classique as from Sth Motuihe reducing the clearance which would have existed if the ferry had kept to its course of 286T. This course was heading to the White Cliffs just ahead of Classique in Photo 1 but by this time Seaway was on a course of 292* heading North of the tall Sentinel Building on the Takapuna North Shore.
The diagram shows the situation which had developed at the stage when M Pigneguy took Photo 3, by which time Seaway was steering 297*.
The diagram also shows how Seaway’s curved course towards the path of Classique had as a consequence severely reduced the clearance which would otherwise have existed.
Also shown is the extended passage taken by Seaway over to Rangitoto instead of taking its usual Regular Run around Browns Island to head for Auckland from whence Classique had come.
