The Planted Shell Case, Part 4 – Memoir of Peter Williams QC
in defence of wrongly convicted Arthur Allen Thomas.
as written in Peter’s recent book “The Dwarf who Moved”
He (George Leighton) said that they became quite angry with him when he
refused to sign the affidavit. He told them that he was going
to take the document to his own Lawyer, and later, during our
visit to Melbourne, George Leighton gave the still unsigned
affidavit to me.
While in Melbourne, I obtained a truthful affidavit
from Mr Leighton, which set out how the head stamps were
made and why there were small differences in the lettering
of each batch. This is because, from the original head stamp,
engraved upon a master hob, hundreds of duplicate hobs were
made, which in turn stamped out the millions of shell-cases
manufactured.
His affidavit also recited the unethical attempts by the
police, Hutton and Nelson, to try to persuade Mr Leighton to
sign the false affidavit. I attached the unsigned false affidavit
to Mr Leightons new affidavit, which he duly executed. It
should be emphasised that Mr Leighton was not an employee
of ICI, but an independent contractor, who, for many years,
had been entrusted by ICI to engrave new head stamps for the
production of shell—cases.

case allegedly found by the police outside the victims’ house
could not have contained one of the bullets that killed them.
These bullets had been recovered from the dead bodies, and
inscribed upon each was the number ‘8’. Because bullets with
the number ‘8’ had no longer been used in the manufacture
of cartridges at the time the type of shell-case found by the
police and the DSIR outside the Crewe house was made, it
was not possible for any of those bullets to have had such a
shell-case. Continues …
