Maritime New Zealand should’ve been able to assess M Pigneguy’s claim for feasibility & it makes a mockery of the intelligence of those involved that it got further than the rubbish bin.
M Pigneguy goes on to claim that following the sounding of his first 5 blasts at 80 mtrs off, “there was no response, even after a further sounding of 5 blasts”
Considering that he began sounding at only 10 seconds distance off Classique. he didn’t allow time for a response, neither was there time left for a second series of 5 blasts – he would’ve collided before then.
M Pigneguy then continues “It became obvious that a collision was imminent unless I took action, which I did by slowing Seaway right down to allow the yacht that had still maintained its original course and speed, to pass ahead of us across our bows & down our starboard side”
So he reckons he had time to contemplate the prospect of a pending collision before taking the action of “slowing Seaway right down” – to which Maritime New Zealand could’ve said – yeah right. Seaway a laden roll on/roll off vehicular ferry travelling at 15.5 knots would need considerably more than 5 seconds to slow down in and that was all the time left after sounding the first series of 5 blasts. Not enough to have waited for a response before sounding a second series of 5 blasts.
Furthermore M Pigneguy’s reference to “allowing Classique to pass ahead across Seaway’s bows & down our starboard side” is certainly not what is seen in the 3 photos he took of the situation he was manufacturing to implicate Bolton and Classique.
Neither was that the observation of Bolton & his crew member who saw Seaway go past astern of Classique as fast as a roll on/roll off ferry would be expected to travel.
