Continuing with Julian Joy’s 2nd Report …
In Judge Davis’ decision, paragraph 13, he also states that: “However, with the greatest of respect to Mr Joy, while it is possible to draw a transit line to plot the general path that the Seaway II was following, it is not possible without a second transit line to determine the precise position along the path the Seaway II was undertaking.”
I respectfully point out that my report paragraph 3.1.1 does exactly this; it uses two transit lines to obtain a position. Neither of these two transit lines is the actual course (or ‘general path’) along which Seaway II is travelling, nor does it need to be. As a professional navigator, I am aware of the general levels of accuracy in position fixing by different methods, and I invited open discussion of my accuracy. The method however is correct, and I believe that Judge Davis has not been advised correctly regarding these technical issues.
Note in addition to Julian Joy’s Report …
Again Judge Davis lurches along without know what he’s talking about. He is quoting from purported expert witness Barry Young who gave him erroneous navigational information. A navigator is not likely to be drawing a transit line to plot the path the path of a vessel. Further more, it is not necessary to have a second transit line to determine the precise point along the first transit line to plot the position of that vessel.
